Origin & History

Barhi belongs to the Al-Ahsa oasis and the orchards of the Eastern Province, where it ripens early at the height of summer. It is sold on the whole bunch in the markets of Hofuf and Qatif, and golden strands hung in shopfronts signal that the season has begun.

Taste & Character

Barhi is the one date best eaten at the khalal stage before it softens: apple-crisp, with a clean caramel sweetness and a whisper of tannin. Ripened to rutab it turns honeyed and very soft, which is why it is often frozen to preserve its crunch.

In the Kitchen

Fresh Barhi goes into salads with rocket and soft cheese, and is served with Saudi coffee as a refreshing alternative to soft dates. Contemporary chefs shave it thin over desserts and grilled dishes.
