Ruzeiz is not a date for occasions but for every day: sold in large bags and kept in every Al-Ahsa home beside the coffee pot. Its moderate sweetness means several can be eaten without heaviness — which explains its popularity with workers, farmers and students.
Taste & Character
A medium, dark-amber fruit with a slightly wrinkled skin and dense semi-dry flesh tasting of brown sugar with a nutty edge. It keeps well in heat, which once made it the date of travellers and pearl divers.
Ruzeiz in the Kitchen
Its texture stands up to cooking, so it is used for date syrup, date paste and fillings, and served in Eastern Province gatherings with cardamom coffee. The palm is prolific, making it one of the oasis farmers' commercial mainstays.
