Al-Jouf is among the oldest settled regions of Arabia, and Dumat Al-Jandal has been tied to the palm since the first millennium BCE. 'Helwa' — 'the sweet one' — is the date Al-Jouf's people know before any other, named for a sweetness that surpasses many cultivars.
Taste & Character
A dark, medium-sized fruit with soft-to-semi-dry flesh and a dense, high sweetness recalling molasses and dried fig. Gifted at the Eids and used in Al-Jouf's traditional sweets, it keeps well through the region's cold winters.
Al-Jouf Today
Al-Jouf is today one of the Kingdom's largest palm and olive producing regions, with date festivals that show Helwa alongside recently introduced cultivars. Helwa remains the emblem of northern agricultural identity.
